How to Prepare Before You Arrive
Dental and medical history, a list of current medications, insurance details, and contact information for your dentist and physician are all worth having ready, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. What Happens During the Consultation
Every practice has its own routine, but most first visits include the same core steps.
Diagnostic Records
Records show what a visual exam alone cannot. Depending on the patient, they may include photos of the face and teeth, X-rays, or 3D images of the teeth and jaws. These help the orthodontist see tooth roots, permanent teeth that have not come in yet, and how the upper and lower jaws relate to each other.
The Exam
The orthodontist looks at how the upper and lower teeth meet, how much room the teeth have, and how the jaws are developing. For children, the exam also considers growth and which permanent teeth are still on the way. It helps to mention jaw discomfort, trouble chewing, or habits such as thumb sucking so they can be factored into the recommendation.
The Treatment Discussion
When treatment is recommended, you can expect to hear what the problem is, what type of treatment may address it, and an estimated treatment length. How Long the Visit Takes
Plan for about 90 minutes at our office. That time covers records, the exam, the treatment discussion, the financial review, and a short tour of our office so you can see where future appointments will take place. If the plan and financial arrangements work for your family and the orthodontist confirms the timing is right, treatment may be able to begin the same day.
Questions to Ask at Your Consultation
A good consultation leaves room for your questions. These can help you compare options and understand the commitment involved:
- What specific problem do you see, and what may happen if we wait?
- Which treatment options fit this case, and why?
- About how long could treatment take, and how often are appointments?
- What will I, or my child, need to do at home during treatment?
- What does the estimate include, such as retainers and follow-up visits?
- How will your office coordinate with my general dentist?
